When selecting tile for your home or business, most people focus on the tile itself—but grout color plays a major role in the finished look. Choosing between a contrasting grout color and a matching grout color can completely change the appearance of your installation.

Contrasting grout is designed to highlight each individual tile. By choosing a grout color that differs from the tile color, the pattern, shape, and layout become more noticeable. This approach works especially well with subway tile, geometric patterns, mosaics, and decorative installations where you want the craftsmanship and design details to stand out. Dark grout with light tile, or light grout with dark tile, creates visual definition and can add character and dimension to a space.

Matching grout, on the other hand, creates a more seamless appearance. When the grout closely matches the tile color, the eye focuses on the overall surface rather than the individual pieces. This can make a room feel larger, cleaner, and more contemporary. Matching grout is often chosen for large-format tiles, natural stone looks, and minimalist designs where a smooth, uninterrupted visual flow is desired.
